HR Roles: Onboarding & Orientation

Orientation is effectively integrating a new employee into their position, their team/department, and the organization. Orientation creates a positive first impression, establishes strong working relationships, and provides the necessary support and information to set the new employee up for success.

It is important to note that multiple parties—HR, managers, and teammates—share the responsibility of orienting a new hire. Orientation programs may also vary depending on the employee’s role and employment type.

  • Introducing Company Culture & Policies: Explaining rules, benefits, and how the workplace operates so they feel welcome and informed.

  • Clarifying Job Responsibilities: Setting clear expectations, workflows, and goals right from day one.

  • Providing Tools & Access: Setting up their computer, work equipment, email, and software accounts before they start.

  • Assigning a Work Buddy: Pairing them with an experienced teammate to answer informal questions and guide them through the first few weeks.

  • Checking In Regularly (30-60-90 Days): Following up at the 1, 2, and 3-month marks to see how they’re adapting, offer feedback, and address any challenges.
